Step 1
Find the NEM schedule on your bill
Open your most recent electric bill and look for the rate schedule. It is usually printed near the top of page 2 or in a “Service Details” / “Rate Schedule” box.
Look for one of these labels: NEM2 (NEM 2.0 — the good one), NEM (legacy NEM 1.0), or NBT (Net Billing Tariff — that is NEM 3.0).

Step 3
Check the true-up period
NEM 2.0 accounts settle on an annual true-up (once a year, the utility reconciles your net exports/imports for the prior 12 months). NEM 3.0 (NBT) accounts settle monthly. If your bill references an annual true-up cycle, that is a strong signal you are on NEM 2.0.
Step 4
Confirm the PTO date
The PTO (Permission to Operate) date is when the utility turned the system on — it starts the 20-year grandfathering clock. PTO before April 15, 2026 = NEM 2.0. The PTO date is usually in your original interconnection paperwork and may appear in your utility portal under the solar/net-metering section.

Where to look for SCE, PG&E, and SDG&E
- SCE (Southern California Edison): sign in at sce.com, open your account, and look under Service Details → Rate Schedule. NEM 2.0 shows as “NEM2”.
- PG&E: sign in at pge.com, go to Energy Usage → Solar Generation, and check the NEM agreement type.
- SDG&E: sign in at sdge.com and look under My Energy → Net Energy Metering.
